The following is an excerpt from an editorial feature in the PureBuxton magazine about a recently completed hand painted kitchen in Buxton:-
When Kate Tagg set about modernising her new home in 2004, a high-quality kitchen was one of her key requirements.
The large room in a period Buxton property was transformed by tailor-made fitted units complete with solid oak doors and a range of the latest appliances. Kate was delighted with the result.
Quality counts and, as a working kitchen, the room has stood the test of time. But 14 years on, Kate was ready for a change: “It felt dated and dingy, but everything was where I wanted it. I didn’t need a new kitchen – I needed a new look.”
She was contemplating the cost of an upgrade when she came across Peak District craftsman Richard Pinder of Prodec, who has built a thriving business by refurbishing, rather than replacing, quality kitchens.
Prodec has been reviving homes for 30 years – including the likes of Chatsworth House. When estate managers needed experts to apply gold gilding to the windows and gates of the stately home, they knew who to ask.
The company has also worked on hundreds of hand painted kitchens, from traditional country cottages to state-of-the-art designer installations.
“We know the kitchen is the beating heart of any home, so we have dedicated part of our business to helping clients who are happy with their existing kitchen, but need to modernise,” says Richard.
“We not only hand-paint the kitchen, but also undertake the renovation of the whole room when needed.”
Kate opted for the full service. Cupboard doors and drawer fronts were taken away to be prepared and repainted in a their commercial spray room, giving a flawless finish; frameworks were also painted and walls sanded to a fine finish.
“I chose the colour and the new handles and they did the rest,” says Kate. “I was impressed that they completely covered the kitchen floor and the carpets in the adjoining rooms to protect them. They also used a dust extraction system – there was no mess anywhere.”
The end result is everything Kate hoped it would be: “I’m thrilled with it. It’s a bright, light room and I find it really relaxing. And the new colour has really brought out the colour of the wall tiles, which was lost before.”
She adds: “Richard and the Prodec team were extremely professional; nothing was too much trouble. I’ve saved a lot of money and given my old kitchen a new lease of life that should last for years.”
